This is my latest. I'm trying to find a way of combining color with graphite that suits me. This one seems a step in the right direction. It's actually two layers. The top layer is graphite on drafting film. The bottom layer is colored pencil on bristol. As the drafting film is translucent, it allows the color to come through but mutes it. I masked off the rose and rings from the back side and spray painted it black so that the background was completely opaque. I still covered the front side with graphite so it had the warmer black typical of the medium.

Turns out scanning graphite on drafting film is even harder than on paper. The tonality is quite a bit warmer in real life and there is a great deal of glare from the scanner.

I'm not too happy with the rings. They don't look very metallic. But this is my first shot at this technique so I'll live with them

The rose is absolutely gorgeous. You improved on the stock photo with your use of color. Nicely done. I agree that the rings need work, but I don't know enough to help... only maybe a very white spot for the point of light... looking at my weddingband, I see the gold completely disappear in the light. But, I have no idea how to describe it better... Nice work! :)

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I later added a little gold leaf to the rings but it doesn't show in a photo very well so I didn't update it.

You're welcome :)

I know art tends to look better in life than when it is reproduced digitally. That's why it makes me cry a little inside when people ask why I visit museums.

I know what you mean. There are some artists whose work I REALLY REALLY want to see in real life. It just ain't the same on a computer.

A lot of the texture is missing digitally... It's sad.
